SOME WORTHY POEMS

"I am an old soul, I enjoy poetry and good music....." 

There has been a burst of poetry in Jos within the last 4 years, a lot of poets are pouring out their gifts and I for one have enjoyed many of their poems. In the past few days, which have been truly trying times for me, some of these poets were my guide. It is a pure disservice not to recommend them to you.

 

Their themes are different but there is this one thing in all of them that resonated with me during these times. It is hope. Hope for Mama, Hope for Nigeria and hope for ourselves. 

Life is hard on everyone, don't you know? But I won't give up, no one ought to. 

Some of these poems are not inspiration poems, they do not inspire, but they help me wander. Wanderings are good ways of leaving the earth and yet remaining in touch with life.

1. Today I Write by Jigs Gatis 

The thoughts expressed in this poem are words that are created to set your heart ablaze with right anger. We need to become angry and do something. 

Jigs has written, I am inspired by his words. I continually listen to him each time I need the motivation to do something.

2. I Wonder by Younglan 

There is one response to the hate in this world, it is love! And love results in many things, many positive things. Younglan has turned it into a poem and I love it.  There is a form of revolution that we can lead, a revolution like that of Martin Luther and Mahatma Ghandhi. We can truly change the world. 

"I have heard tales of chaos and wars 

   ........

  We will not keep shut

  We will be radical

  And as we pray we will be practical "

3. Rib From The Dust by Lardo, Viva, Pyalhan, and Wordsdiva 

Although it is a cipher, I do not listen to this poem as such. It is one straight piece of the same spirit. The words in this are dangerous words that can shake up the fabric of society, elevating women to the right place where they belong. What if we stopped seeing the "false" prejudices, limitations and barriers set for girls as they grow? I grew up with 4 sisters, all of them topped their classes, two went on to become Head Girls, and the others were prefects. Every day I see how they make life beautiful for me, girls could be that way! Full of light, hope, and orchestrated to be the best that they can be!

4. Vision by Northpriest

Honestly, Northpriest Judha is the inspiration for posting this list of poems that have been guides to me, what is very unfortunate is that Northpriest rarely publishes his works. I have listened to this poem more than 100 times already. The first day I got this audio, I listened to it about 10 times (or more). 

Poets have a powerful way of forcing you to hibernate and think. 

This poem, full of sarcasm, has so much truth in it that you cannot afford to not listen to it. He has a powerful message for the world and he laces it beautifully with an accent that keeps you glued to your audio devices. Though this poem was written especially for the 2019 elections, each of us can glimpse a little bit of what we can have as a country.

5. Mama by Words Diva ft Philip Dobson

Mums are TERRIBLY AMAZING. I wanted to say that I think of my mum everything, as though I can ever forget her, she is always on my mind and this poem fixes it right! 

I will never be able to pen better words for mum, I will just relax here and think of Mama as I listen to this. Words Diva has done a brilliant work here, full of passion and complete description of the African Mother!

All of these poets are contemporary poets, just that they speak as though they are men and women from another age. There is wisdom in their words and I have dwelled there in the past few days, I am truly grateful for their companionship (in words). 

Words are dangerous, they can guide you into many things!
