Cyber Attack
St. Bartholomew was founded in 1123. For over 800 years it has provided medical services to people in the UK. It is the oldest hospital in Britain still providing medical services which occupies where it was originally built on. As a hospital, it is known for excellence and it remains of the most historic buildings in the UK.
It has survived the Great Fire of London, the Blitz, the first World War and the Second World War. During the Second World War, even as the skies of Britain rained bombs from Hitler’s German forces, St. Bart was untouched. It remained open providing services to wounded soldiers of the war.
Although St. Barth had survived for 873 years, nothing could prepare it for what would happen on the 12th May 2017!
Doctors rushed out to announce to patients that they cannot perform operations, appointments cancelled, ambulances diverted and surgical services closed for the day.
What was happening to the hospital that had survived the bombs of Hitler?
St. Barth’s had just been hacked! All their online services. But St. Barth wasn’t alone, it was the National Health Service of England that had been hacked. That was not all that was affected. The WannaCry attack affected 200,000 computers across 150 companies!
According to Cyence, the total economic loss as a result of the attack reached upto $4 billion.
So, in few minutes, the almighty St. Barth experienced an attack that it could not control.
Exactly!
As technology advance, it is only logical that its power also increases. The power to do both good and bad.
How does this affect you as a Nigerian? All around I’ve witnessed a lot of hype around what Technology or AI can do for us, but I haven’t heard a lot about the harm technology can cause.
Nigeria is just beginning to build its digital infrastructure, look beyond the hype. We must also build mechanisms that can protect us in terms of such attacks! Technology is not all rosy, sometimes, as seen above it is a powerful weapon in the wrong hands.
Do you know that during the 2015 election, a prominent Nigerian business man who was sympathetic to Goodluck Jonathan paid million of dollars to Cambridge Analytica to hack the medical record of Muhammadu Buhari?
Right technology usage is as important as technology development itself; we should advocate for both!
