Nigerians!

I cannot understand Nigerians.

In this short life I may never understand them.

Another tragic event happened around Polo Round About yesterday. A woman lost her life. The scene was horrible, I don't know what to say. May God console the family!

Some citizens have asserted that this is the third accident in a very short time. Others have pointed out that despite all the accidents that have happened there, the statue there has remained untouched. These set of people BELIEVE ALL THE ACCIDENTS ARE SPIRITUAL, that it is a form of sacrifice. I heard that last week there was a prayer session that was held around the Round About. What a waste of energy and time.

Rather than face our problem squarely, we prefer to attribute it to spiritual issues so it can obliterate our responsibilities.

Many of the drivers have not attended an effective driving school. Especially for big cars, the drivers are mostly unschooled people. It is not uncommon to find them using drugs to boost their efficiency and to keep them awake. A common practice amongst these drivers is that they are bullish, somehow, they have this attitude that the road rules does not apply to them, they rarely slowdown in the interest of other road users, they believe all other road users should clearly the road for them. Also, the road network from Secretariat Bridge to Polo is a straight express road without any bump. Add it up together, is it strange that these set of people cause accidents? In fact, I am surprised that we are not experiencing more accidents.

Face your issues. This is not spiritual. God has provided the answer – use your head.

As a first step, create bumps along that long stretch of road. Second step, and an important one, not everyone should drive a car. One should get at least basic education before he or she is allowed to drive. Apart from that, driving schools should be immersive. Check developed countries, there driving rules are stricter than WAEC. They love their lives! We hate ours. The FRSC and VIO are already in place, they should take up the task of educating ALL drivers.

On arriving the scene of the accident, I heard a few people asking for the driver to kill him. Fellow Nigerians, we hate ourselves. We hate living. We really do. How does the killing of the driver solve the problem at hand or resurrect the deceased woman? How does one death resolve the death of another? For earth sake, why are we doing this to ourselves? An accident has happened, whether careless or not, and someone has died, we are sad; killing another human person will not cure our sadness, it will only spread the sadness to another family.

P.S: Of course, accidents are accidents. Unintentional. But we can do a lot to prevent and reduce them, we have clearly not done enough!
