DADDY FREEZE AND THE PASTORS
Men like Daddy Freeze are not new in church history. They show up every once in a while. There was one who showed up in the time of David. His name was Shimei, he came from the same family with Saul. One time, after a successful coup that removed David as King, David was leaving the city and Shimei met him on the way out, cursed him, and told him all the shits possible.
You know what David did? First of
all, to know what David did. You need to meet someone whose name was Abishai,
the son of Zeruiah. Abishai told David “Why should this dead dog curse my
lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.”
This story can be found in 2
Samuel 16.
For the record, even Jesus's siblings fell
amongst this category. They didn’t believe in Him and one day they told the
most discouraging thing any family member could tell his sibling; "You
ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the
miracles you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret.
Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." This is
classic Savagery. You can find that story in John 7:4.
I have not read anywhere in scriptures
where the perfect response to mockery or derogatory comments is a harsh reply.
And then, for both Pastor David
Ibiyeomi and Pastor David Oyedepo, there’s a historical example as to what is
to be done. Those calling for silence and respect for constituted authority
astonish me. Silence in the face of wrong is not a Christian doctrine or
teaching, Jesus has never taught that. And as they like to say, no one is
perfect and it is more reason why EVERYONE NEEDS to be corrected, in love. In Galatians
2:11, we read of how Paul corrected Peter to his face. Remember that Peter was
the rock, upon whom the church has been built. Peter was the first Pope. The
highest authority in the church. The man whose shadow was healing the sick. Paul,
the last born in the family (then) went ahead to tell Peter how wrong he was in
treating new believers.
Especially for believers, we shouldn’t
even be angry with Daddy Freeze. Yes, we shouldn’t. We should pray for him. The
irony is that we are doing the exact opposite. Defending the Pastors and vilifying
Daddy Freeze. Paul in his teachings endears us to love everyone and to cater for
everyone, correcting everyone especially those in the faith. In other words,
our real response shouldn’t be focusing on Daddy Freeze but on the men who preach
on God’s pulpit on behalf of all of us. Yes, we should pray for them just like
we do for Daddy Freeze. And we should correct them, in love.
Christianity does not have a
culture of hating critics and defending its Pastors even when they are wrong. With
great power and influence, comes great responsibility. It is for this very
reason that we should expect more from men who have such power.
For those who elevate this into
the spiritual real saying this like “these are things of the spirit”, fair
enough, you could have kept quiet and kept praying.
Very recently, an American Pastor
Louie Giglio made a blunder while interviewing Lacrae. He called slavery a “white
blessing”. Within a few hours, American Christians pointed out his statement to be
wrong. He apologized and the church is matching on.
We can make mistakes, and we can
correct them. We all make mistakes.
We can pray for Daddy Freeze and
the Pastors and we can correct the Pastors.
Sometimes, I really wonder what
Jesus would do to Daddy Freeze. And I wonder whether Jesus will speak like these
Pastors on this particular issue. And how Jesus will do if he was ever wrong at
all. And whether Jesus will shield anyone who is wrong in His sheep or correct
them.
By the way, in the video of
Pastor Ibiyeomie, there were claps and celebratory shouts in the background
while the man of God went on ranting and cursing Daddy Freeze. E shock me.
